Early in August my older daughter Katie announced that she is getting married on December 1st to Tim, a work/study colleague she has known for years . Tim has a five year old daughter, Poppy, whose 26 year old mother died giving birth to her. She is a beautiful, delicate, little blond-haired, blue-eyed girl and I love her already, even tho' I've only met her twice.
When my daughter told me the news, although it wasn't totally unexpected, it was still a shock. It took me a week or two to adjust to the idea of Katie being an instant step-mother and of my being an instant step-grandmother!!
Last weekend we all went for a barbecue in a park and I realised that it has been a long time since my three children were five and what a pleasure it was to have a little girl in the family again. For the first time I understand why (most) grandparents dote on their grandchildren.
I look forward to getting to know Tim and Poppy better. My major problem is to stop myself rushing out and buying toys etc for Poppy. I think I am very blessed.
